This past week, Tyler, Jacob and I went to Woodland Terrace again to have our weekly meeting. Instead of meeting with Caralee this week like we usually do, we met with Cole to discuss details of the prom. In the meeting, he made us think about a lot of different specific things. For example, he mentioned how we need to contact Greenfield Banking Company for extra parking the night of the prom and also how we need to limit the amount of people going to the prom. Besides that though, we got out letter printed out and we were able to see the final product, which was pretty cool! Now our biggest thing to do is send out our letter to different companies for sponsorships, continue working on the flyer for the actual prom, and to then plan specifics for the actual prom night. I am really excited about this event and what all we are going to accomplish!

This past week we finally finished all of our intergenerational videos! It was such a good feeling to have them completed and really feel like we accomplished a lot with them. We have six of them now and we're not quite sure how many more we will do, if we even are able to conduct any more. When second semester starts we will move straight into planning for the senior prom meaning that our schedule will be busy with planning food, music, dates, among other things. Since we finished the videos though we were able to go to Woodland Terrace this past Thursday to attend a grand buddies Christmas party. At the party, residents of the community were paired with kids from a local school, Sugar Creek, and they each gave gifts to each other and had lunch together. It was cool to see them get along so well in person! it was a great week working with the Woodland Terrace community.
We didn't get as much accomplished this week as we wanted too, but that's alright because we have a new week to start fresh with. We all went to do our interview on Wednesday and because of that I wasn't able to work on the next video after Retha's. I also missed school Friday so we didn't accomplish anything then either. I am thinking about coming in during labs on Wednesday to get caught up and then staying back from the interview to get more work done too. Hopefully by the time I make my next blog, we can have accomplished the next video.
We were also thinking of entering into other projects as well, but were not quite sure if anything will come from those. One of the ideas was to hold a fundraiser online or in person for the victims of the Hurricanes in Puerto Rico. The teacher who told us about the idea has never gotten back to us, so we're not sure if the need is still there or if she might have gotten other people to help. Regardless, it doesn't look like we will be participating in that. We are still constantly searching for different projects to help with though and will continue to work hard. This past week was another successful one. We are getting more and more comfortable every week with the interviews ad they are going more and more smoothly. I have been working hard on Retha Baker's video, and we still have another video to do after that. We are continuing to learn a lot about the individuals we are interviewing and I can't wait to see how all the videos turn out in the end.
A lot of work has been accomplished in the time since the last blog update I have had. Since the last blog post, I have finished the first and second intergenerational videos. I am very happy and proud that both the videos came out just like we hoped they would. Like I mentioned before, our group was a little behind because we had a lot of work to do with the videos and we were having some minor troubles with the software we were using, but we made sure to stay focused. Also, instead of trying to rush through all our work to catch up we took our time and made sure we did everything correctly. Sure enough, we have now caught up and have both videos done which is a great feeling! Below, you can see a picture of Joyce Arthur who we made our second video about, a screenshot of the opening of her video, and a screenshot of the opening of Pat and Bob Oakerton's videoAt the beginning of the week, we started on our first video. This has been a major milestone as we have been working towards this for several weeks now. It feels good to finally have something really substantial like this project to be working on instead of just talking about things to do. On Wednesday, Tyler and Jacob went to the Woodland Terrace to interview the next person whom we are making the video about while I continued to work on putting the first video together. The goal is to have each video done by the time we interview our next person/couple. Overall, we are a little behind schedule with completing the video because of some technical issues with the computer at the beginning of the week, but we should be all caught up hopefully in the next 2 weeks. The video currently is a little over halfway done and should be done by Tuesday at the latest.
Overall, Im happy with the progress we've made so far. We've gotten good feedback on our project and heard a lot of good things from many people saying how they enjoy what we are doing and how they can't wait to see the finished product. I as well as my fellow group members hope to continue learning things from the elderly we visit. It has been a fun experience so far, and even though there has been some setbacks we can't wait to see what the future holds. We did not have a project proposal like most other groups in our class. What we are doing is a more spread out project and our goal isn't working for a specific event (for now). We did have a semi-presentation to Mr. Large to make sure our project was okay to carry out and that we were meeting the guidelines of this project. In talking to Mr. Large, we told him our goals and our timeline. Right now our timeline includes going to Woodland Terrace on Wednesdays and then working on the intergenerational videos throughout the rest of the week. It has taken several weeks of preparation and thought to get to this point so far. We have gone to Woodland Terrace the past 5 weeks talking to Caralee about project ideas, signing waivers, and discussing our rights with regards to the community members. So far what we have learned about the project is that it is going to be a lot of work putting all the videos together, and that we have to stay focused to please the people in the community as well as accomplish our individual goals.
I am working on a service project with two of my classmates Tyler Young and Jacob Ackerman. We are visiting an assisted living facility in our community called Woodland Terrace once a week, and from there we complete any tasks they need help completing and also are in the process of making intergenerational videos for the elderly in the community. We came to this project primarily because we wanted to help the community and we observed that there is a need for help in the Woodland Terrace community and also a disconnect between the elderly and the youth of today. We believe it is important for students of today to learn lessons from the elderly and to also care about the older people in the community and we feel we are helping accomplish both of those things.
What we hope to accomplish with this project is: making intergenerational videos, holding a senior prom in the spring, writing letters to the elderly during holidays, and helping with housekeeping things at the facility every once in a while. We hope that with the videos we can help the elderly convey life lessons to the youth of today, as well as have videos to share with the family of the person who the video is about. |
